'urdu'
ghazal in English translation:
1.
haalaat se har aan hi, mei’n dast-o-garibaan huu’n,
is khaar-zaar-e-zeest mai’n, aTka huva saamaan huu’n.
(I’m always in the state of fighting with my environments and do
rumble.
My life is like a piece of cloth stuck with the spiny branches of a tree
in jungle.)
2

har haal mai'n ae zindgi, taira mei'n qadardaan huu'n.
( I have been enjoying thou, O, my life, though thou art fretful and prickly.
I’m obligated to you because your attraction turns my bad mood to
good quickly.)
3.
kal tak mei'n vaza'-daari mai'n, khud aap thha apni misaal,
apne hi ghar mai’n aajkal, bikhra huva samaan huu'n.
(Some time before, I was an exemplary in my own style/designation.
Due to todays' upheavals I’m like a scattered household in my own
home/habitation.)
4.
huu’n kaun mei'n, aaya kaha'n se, yeh bhi kab aaya samajh,
manzil yahaa'n par be-nihaa'n, sochuu’n to mei’n hairaan huu'n.
( I don’t understand, who I am and where I have come from as well?
Also which is my destination and why I'm in search of it and want here
to dwell?)
5.
koi safaaie kyuu'n kare, mairi lipaaie kyuu'n kare,
benaam se ik shehr mai'n, ujRa sa ik makaan huu'n.
(I’m like an abandoned house in a no name city located in desertion.
And why I do expect someone must clean me up, and upgrade my condition?)
6. ma’suumiyat ki hathkaRi, toRi javaani ne miri,
raste laga huu'n naapne, jab se chaRha parvaan huu'n.
(My adulthood has broken the handcuff of my childhood in such a fierce
way.
I’ve been wandering since then, as my adolescence is lost and gone
away.)
7.
tanqeed karke mujh pe tum, daanaa bana do ge mujhe,
mei'n Duubta huu'n soch mai'n, kehte ho jab, naadaan huu'n.
(The criticism of the people on me, makes me strong, and enhances my wisdom.
I always do cogitate deeply, when they call me unwise and boredom.)
8. rutba bashar ka dediya, mujh ko khuda ne, shukr hai,
apne ‘amal se khud magar, haivaan huu’n, shaitaan huu’n.
(I'm thankful to Almighty that He made me human being at least.
But am sorry for my actions which make me sometimes satin as well as a
beast.)
9. 'Ashraf' nikaala tha mujhe, jis vaqt, mei’n us roz se,
phir justujuuey khuld mai'n, nikla huva insaan huu'n.
(‘Ashraf’, I belong that man, who was once expelled from the
paradise, due to lunacy.
And now, am again wandering in search of heavenly place, to prove my adequacy.)
